True Sign Of Spring-The Farmer’s Market! Walk Or Roll, Get There (Weekly Chatter)

Tomorrow kicks off Traverse City’s Sara Hardy Downtown Farmers Market–come out and celebrate spring!

As PPS’s Benefits of Public Markets illustrates, the value of a farmer’s market goes far beyond buying carrots. In fact, it is one of the most successful ways to bring a community together.

The Downtown Development Authority oversees the farmer’s market and they recently hired the non-profit SEEDs to manage it-the mayor has a good description of the impact of this hire (Plan for TC).

Weekly Chatter

We willingly pay thousands of dollars to travel long distances to soak in the ‘character’ of wonderful places. My wife intuitively knows that the shopping will rarely disappoint, and I know that these places are invigorating, inspiring and flat out illegal to build in my home town.

  • RT (BikeShopGirlcom) “If we will be quiet and ready enough, we shall find compensation in every disappointment.” -Henry David Thoreau
  • RT(WalkableDFW) Walkable neighborhoods yield authentic places, outgrowths of the personalities within. Those are what create memorable experiences.
  • RT (T4America) States complain about woeful condition of their transpo infrastructure, beg/plead for more federal $$, move to enact gas tax holidays. Hmm.
  • RT (BikePortland ) We don’t need more studies on how separated bikeways make cities better/safer. We need a study on the huge lack of leadership to build them.
  • RT (fotoman311 ) “When you ride, you see what’s ugly and you see what’s nice, and you demand what’s nice from your city” – Hindman #GRBikeSummit
To Wrap
Traverse City won’t ever have expressways, but the following quote hits home regarding some of Northwest Lower Michigan’s biggest tensions…think a current plan for urban bypass in the middle of the city.
Who must have expressways in cities? Not city-dwellers… they’re there already. Expressways in cities are necessities only for suburbanites who commute.

Have a weekend!

Gary: Why no mention of the TC Tweed Ride (http://tweedridetc.tumblr.com/) in the Weekly Chatter? I’m hearing all sorts of chatter about this event….

    Keep up the good work.

It’s on the docket…It’s only May 5th Mr. Coco, we have plenty of time to bring out the tweed.
