An Underpass And A Roundabout

Video Tuesday

Multilevel roundabout in Houten, Netherlands by

Raise the road a little and lower the separated trail a little to provide a well-lit, welcoming “underpass”. Then, provide some delineation and separate people on foot from people on wheels with a wide underpass that includes a sidewalk and you have an intersection most of us would enjoy using.

This example rather desperately needs attractive landscaping, BUT it is a positive example of ACTIVE concern for safety and civic sense in lieu of business-as-usual, “it wouldn’t work here” mind set.

I agree about the landscaping–I almost mentioned it. I also purposefully didn’t recommend it for anywhere in Traverse City. I typically don’t think tunneling or over passes are first solutions, but I do like how the intersection in the video shows a comprehensive approach. They didn’t simply tunnel under a road, they altered the road and thus the behavior.

Cool to see. True that tunneling should not be a first solution. That intersection cost a a LOT to build, but is thoughtful… except that the bikes get the grade change and the auto road stays level!
