For Your Review: Division Street Recommendations

Tomorrow night’s City Commission study session will discuss the following recommendations from the Division Street steering committee. The group consisted of volunteers concerned about Traverse City’s Division Street corridor. It included citizens from across the city as well as representatives from area businesses, organizations, and governmental units. It was well represented by the diversity of the City. The City also has completed modeling for the modern roundabout scenarios with positive results.

    These recommendations are great! Think it’s pretty cool that a diverse swath of the community recognizes the need to change our most dangerous street!

    Nicely done. My only change would be to sharpen the list of four objectives by making them all “demonstrable requirements.” That’s what objectives are for. Adding this statement on the last one alone suggests a presumption that the first three are not as important.

    The City Commission meeting is open to the public, and invites your suggestions. It will be held at 7:00 p.m. in the Commission chambers on the second floor of the government building at 8th and Boardman.

    I will be there to advocate for a pleasant-looking pedestrian/bike overpass at the “entrance” to the downtown, aka 14th and Division. That terrible intersection is SO dangerous to cross now. However, from the NW corner, It is just a short walk down a peaceful grassy path in the Commons to the new Greenspire School. How sad that the students in this environmentally-focused charter middle school will not be allowed to ride their bikes or walk to school because their parents (rightly) deem that one intersection too dangerous to cross. A gentle-looking pedestrian/bike overpass at Meijers and another at 13th would show people entering the city that Traverse City does care about pedestrians.

    I’d love to see all this positive change happen! Division is a big problem street, addressing the entire length of it at a fundamental level would realize huge benefits.

    Unfortunately, while overpasses seem to be an easy solution today, they would ultimately undermine the pedestrian and the goal of a holistic solution. How would work to improve a pedestrian crossing at 11th be viewed in a situation where 14th had an overpass? Crossings should be uniformly safe and convenient!

    Thanks for keeping this updated. I can’t make the meeting but I sent all the commissioners a letter. And the mayor even responded! I hope we can make some progress on this huge issue.

    I basically told him about the fear sprinting across four lanes of traffic at 11th st. as well as all the yellow/redlight runners at 7th. I don’t see why police hang out by tom’s westbay, they should be sitting at 7th and division on a summer afternoon.

    After watching the City Commission study session tonight it is clear that a few city commissioners just don’t get it. The city should consider buying the property at front and division for a future roundabout site. I hope that many of these recommendations can be started by years end.

    Matt, they’ve already lost that opportunity. CVS already has a purchasing agreement on that property that needs to be exercised by the summer or fall of 2012. I think county commissioner Ross Richardson explained it well in public comment last night, the City’s best option now is to leverage the interests of CVS to alter their design and layout to better accomplish city goals. If it goes back on the market, the city might then consider purchasing it.

    And, speaking directly about the intersection, improvements can still be made in the Division St. corridor if we focus on other intersections. Front and Division will become more congested at rush hour as time passes on and, although that has other negatives (pollution for one), congestion is an excellent way to slow traffic and increase the “perceived cost” to people choosing to drive. Improvements to West Front carried through the intersection can occur without a roundabout.

    the other point Ross made was that the corner is a brownfield site, which means that any pharmacy will request a large redevelopment subsidy of captured public tax dollars, which requires future city and county approval. If the city determines that its top priority is to fix the intersection, that would be a good reason not to subsidize redevelopment that will preclude fixing the intersection. It is entirely at the city’s discretion to make a decision like that – no one is entitled to such funds.
