Modern Roundabouts: Saving Lives, Saving Money

I received my annual insurance newsletter from Liberty Mutual recently. On the back page is a spread touting the safety of roundabouts. It is a reminder that it will be increasingly difficult for local politicians to fight consideration and ultimate construction of modern roundabouts as the insurance industry becomes increasingly involved.

In the end, it’s not about what one elected official likes or dislikes, it is about what saves lives and, particularly for the insurance industry, reduces payouts.

I’m not surprised to see insurance companies send this information out to consumers. Like most things, how we deal with traffic will ultimately come down to economics. A 2005 AAA report found that the annual cost of of traffic crashes were $164.2 billion and $67.6 billion for congestion(PDF).

Another report from the IIHS (PDF) concluded that if just 10% of the nations signalized intersections were converted to roundabouts, annual fuel consumption would be reduced by 500 million gallons and vehicle delays would be reduced by about 800 million hours.

So, it looks like it will take the massive insurance industry lobby to advocate an issue with elected officials that, while intended to benefit the insurance industry, will be even better for the general public! There’s a Daily Show bit waiting in this.
