Go Team! Policy Changes Need Love Too

Go Team!

A couple of items from last night’s City Commission meeting deserve a nod of appreciation to the City Commission. First, the City passed a Complete Street resolution without comment. It may not be the bold resolution or ordinance that some of us would have written, but as long the actions to follow include the planning, consideration and implementation for all users–it’s all good.

The regional Complete Streets Coalition is still valuable and could use your energy.

A second item the City Commission passed shortly after the resolution, was an amendment to  City Code of Ordinances, Uniform Traffic Code Section 410.03, that requires all vehicles (including bicycles) to stop for pedestrians in marked crosswalks. State law only requires a yield, or as some like to say, that a driver doesn’t hit a pedestrian. There is an attempt to change the state law, but that has yet move out of committee. By passing this ordinance, Traverse City joins Ann Arbor in passing policy that will help people safely cross a street. A2 recently began ticketing people for not following their local law (A2.com)

The incomplete map below shows the city’s marked crosswalks. Unregulated crosswalks are crossings without lights or stop signs, but otherwise marked. There was a concern by commissioners about proper and adequate signage that I will address in the future. Basically, I commend them for being careful, but I have a concern about over signage and that it may actually be less than helpful. For now though, go team!

Other items addressed last night involve the hotel tunnel (not moved forward), Cherry Capital project (now the Front St. Cass St project, moved forward), a change to the parking code (moved forward with changes), the parks and recreation element to the master plan (adopted)….We may or may not get to these.

Please, if you see a typo, donate to the cause and then let me know about it. I write quickly sometimes.

Keep the Wheels Turning

This is great news for Traverse City. Thanks to all of the advocates who helped push this forward, and to the city commission for the leadership. It will take a while to change the mindset of our local drivers, however our visitors should be on board quickly. Stopping for pedestrians is already normal driver behavior in much of the country.

Great credit should go to Bob Otwell for putting complete streets on the map in Traverse City several years ago. I’d never heard of it before Bob started talking it up at City Commission meetings and in small living-room gatherings around town. And here he is traveling around the country on his bike, two thousand miles from home, seeing this idea coming to fruition after so many others have taken on the charge. Thanks now to TART, the CCCC, MyWhAT, AND the City. You should all be celebrating. Nice work all around!

Thank you for your years of advocacy Bob, Gary and many others. Thank you also City Commission for your leadership and doing the right thing for both the pedestrian crossing ordinance and the Complete Streets resolution.
