Announcement: opportunity to show MDOT some love

A community-supported blogthank you.

MDOT Open House • Tonight, 5-7pm • Michigan Works in Traverse City

The Michigan Department of Transportation requests public feedback on its roadmap to 2035? The road agency is traveling the state introducing its transportation plan, dubbed,”

Moving Michigan Forward”–an update to their 2005-2030 plan. Tonight the open house will be in Traverse City at the Council of Governments Conference Room at the Michigan Works Building at 1209 S. Garfieldbe careful crossing Garfield Ave., that stroad can be  beast.

I can’t say how much impact your visit will have on MDOT’s direction forward, but typically very little public comment is generated. One, that’s unfortunate, but as well, the public comment the road agency receives doesn’t simply get lost in shuffle.

I encourage anyone interested in quality of life issues related to public spaces, including the roadways,  and their impact on our communities to make an appearance tonight. Then, follow-up by learning at www.michigan.gov/slrp where additional public comment will be accepted until September 1.

A simple message in support of a more balanced approach to all users and improved attention to quality of life issues, what engineers call Context Sensitive Solutions, is encouraged. The state’s transportation commission recently passed the final draft of its Complete Streets policy (PDF) which should also provide direction for MDOT.
