Traffic calming: A means to livable streets

The missing ingredient in Traverse City is the political will, creativity, and recognition that speed on neighborhood streets is simply uncivilized–yes, I’m referring to the man who drive 50-mph down my street on Sunday.

Maybe the City Commission and Staff should visit these streets instead of going to a conventional meeting (MyWhat Walk-a-bout) Hey, come to East 1oth Street – I have renamed it “Oryana Highway”. Someone is going to eventually get hurt (hopefully not me as I run after there vehicle to remind them of neighborhood streets and pose the question “have you ever been to Mackinaw Island, isn’t it nice”…

There are so many dangerous streets – I saved a lady from getting smacked by someone going 45 on Nate’s “Oryana Hwy” the other day and Washington where we live has been re-imagined as wide freeway where cars daily reach 50. The fact that it’s right by F&M Park probably means it’s just a matter of time before someone loses a child to a needless accident. We have sent letters to the city but street planning is apparently still all about cars in Traverse City.

I usually yell at people when they are driving that fast, but all that probably does is feed the irrational antagonism that some people feel towards pedestrians. You’re dead on correct that this behavior is uncivilized, Gary.

Living just off Cass on 16th I won’t let my 2 year old even go in the front yard. Its like a race track cut through for people coming off Cass at 45mph.

Yelling at the speeders never seems to help but i sit on the front porch and do it anyway.
